SASH prides itself on its community based approach. Through talks with the local committees and the families living in the region, we decide on what projects we will undertake.  Then by coordinating and working alongside local volunteers we are able to complete projects that are desperately needed by the community.

Our major projects include (but are not limited to):

Shelter was identified as the primary concern because without secure waterproof shelter families living in camps or on the streets can fall victim to crime, disease, chronic discomfort and fear. Moving out of spontaneously formed camps and back to their own land and an independent way of life is a very high priority for most people.

Clean water is vital for any populated area, even more so since the outbreak of Cholera in the country in October 2010. Following the earthquake many domestic open wells have become dry and the existing potable water pumps are under such demand that the water is no longer clean and safe to drink.

Education is valued highly as so few Haitians are educated to the secondary level that most parents recognise and respect the need for their children to attend school.  With the collapse of family homes many school materials were lost.  With the collapse of the school buildings the opportunity for classes was gone.  SASH and our partners are all dedicated to providing safe learning environments and materials to ensure that all children who were in school pre-earthquake have the opportunity to return.
