UK Coordinator

Janet Brown is a retired registered nurse and therapeutic counsellor. She has set up and managed a number of support services for families experiencing loss in both the NHS and voluntary sector. Janet has visited charity projects in India, Indonesia and the Sudan where she has witnessed people’s lives being transformed by the introduction of appropriate and inexpensive resources. She lives with her husband near Scarborough.

Chair of Trustees

Dr Philip Brown is a retired Consultant Physician who now works for the Tribunal Service accessing the needs of people with physical and mental disability. Last year he visited a hospital for tribal people in Gudalur, India and was impressed by what can be achieved by a small number of people who listen and respond to people’s needs.

Philip Barber Philip’s career started as an advisor for the charity Shelter in 1987. He has twenty years experience in housing and social welfare law both as a solicitor and barrister. Philip practices at Zenith Chambers in Leeds and is a SASH trustee and legal advisor; he has experience of social security and human rights.

Laura Smith is also from North Yorkshire and currently practices as an accountant in London. She is a trustee for SASH and has responsibility for managing the finances and the gift aid donations for the charity.


Katy Owen Smith graduated in 2005 from University where she was President of the Student Union. After studying to become a teacher she joined Graham School in Scarborough as a Drama Teacher. She has organised school productions and various fundraising events where she has developed the skills of inspiring and encouraging young people to participate.
